Nothing motivates Timothy Johnston like being told something can’t be done. When all avenues appear to have been exhausted, that’s when Tim thrives and contributes most impressively.
He’s always looking for better ways of doing things, and since taking on a full-time commitment with Vacation Myrtle Beach in 2003, he’s been a catalyst for major changes that have brought a fresh new focus and direction, and a revitalized energy to a company whose moderate success he would never be content with. Excited about the growth potential he immediately saw, Tim immersed himself in studying the inner workings of the company and quickly identified process improvements that would bring the user experience to new heights of fun and enjoyment, while leading the business model into the future.
Obvious upgrades include the revitalization of two landmark properties, and streamlined marketing with invigorating features, but it’s the changes he makes behind the scenes on a day-to-day basis that hold the most value.
Under his forward-thinking influence, a clear new mandate started to take shape, and lastSeptember, the company celebrated the official launch of a unified and inspiring VisionStatement. The new direction not only embraces a commitment to ongoing growth and leadership in the industry, but it also promotes added value for a more client-focused experience, positioning Vacation Myrtle Beach as a clear leader in family destinations that offer the latest in amenities and services for guest enjoyment.
Tim sees opportunities for growth and outcomes where others haven’t looked. He’s an excellent listener and absorbs ideas from the trusted team around him. Then he analyzes his learnings,seeing perceived challenges as opportunities. He inherently understands that a merging of the minds is required for collective buy-in of a complex new idea, and to that end, he has worked diligently to adapt his own communication style, seeking to better relate both in group and individual interactions. He credits his ongoing personal growth to the works of Tony Robbins,including the Business Mastery and Date with Destiny programs, which struck a cord with Tim and serve as his leadership guideposts. His efforts have contributed to a culture of open-minded thinking, where titles fade, while people and ideas flourish. He expects great things of himself and of others, and never overlooks the little things like offering a word of praise for a job well done.
Tim had the opportunity to exert his entrepreneurial spirit from a very young age, having been immersed in the family business since childhood, and encouraged by his father to jump in and get his hands dirty. As a young adult, he sought a unique identity for himself and spent his early career as an NCHA horse trainer, enjoying immense success. Surprising naysayers with his drive and determination, he came onto the scene eager to learn and refusing to take no for an answer,and was soon the owner and operator of a successful business.
Although his current position is a return to his hospitality industry roots and the influence of his father S.M. Johnston, he took nothing for granted and welcome additional tutelage from JimCreel Sr, Craig Conrad and David Brittain, mainstays of the company.
To Tim, every advancement signifies growth and success, from the most rudimentary changes like improving check-in processes, or finding apps to log housekeeping data, all the way to targeting a hundred percent growth over 10 years. As a respected member of the Vacation Myrtle Beach team, Chris Johnston’s most praised contribution is coming up with ideas. Not only to improve on what’s already working but also to build a better vacation experience for guests, to offer more value, and to encourage increased use of amenities and resources. To that end, he continually brainstorms the latest and most popular services that will attract and please guests, giving them more of what they want right there onsite, so they don’t have to go anywhere else.
He visualizes the guests’ perspective, making him invaluable in designing a superior customer experience. Further, he makes himself visible and accessible to guests, and solicits their feedback on existing services and how new initiates might impact their vacation. He also engages extensively with individual property managers, seeking their insights on how to keep each property thriving.
He’s conceptualized some impressive upgrades, including the first swim-up bar in Myrtle Beach,and a lobby redesign featuring a Starbucks kiosk and beautiful walk-out terrace. Often appearing unaware of his own unique gifts, Chris sees in others what gifts they possess and he goes to great strides to position people where they are most likely to reach their potential and be happy, positive, and proud contributors. He’s honest and genuine with a kindhearted spirit, and lives by his personal code to make a difference and improve the quality of people’s lives. He does this with a quiet sincerity and declines any acknowledgement for his efforts.
Having grown up immersed in the family business, Chris is passionate about the company’s role in the community, and strives to keep Vacation Myrtle Beach successful for future generations.Along with his brother Timothy, he shoulders the burden of upholding his father’s legacy of giving back. Chris understands keenly that not only his immediate family, but his extended family and friends, and much of the community depend on the business’s ongoing success.Letting them down is not an option. He’s also passionate about continuing his father’s tradition of philanthropy, and is actively reviving the charitable events side of the business. That’s why increasing revenue drives him every day, because you can’t share what you don’t have, and it’s in Chris Johnston’s nature to share.
Pursuits currently on his horizon include extensive expansion of the food and beverage side of the business. Beyond that, he says there’s no telling what will be revealed as the next most feasible area to conquer, but he’s confident that he’ll see it coming and be one step ahead of the market, ready to launch into the next phase of growth for Vacation Myrtle Beach.
